How to Use a 3-Bucket Mopping System

Utilizing a 3-bucket mopping protocol is considered best practice in a cleanroom environment. The reason behind this is a 3-bucket mopping system consists of a clean solution bucket, a waste bucket, and a rinse water bucket. This allows a user to rinse their mop after using it, removing contaminants before putting it back into a clean disinfectant bucket.

Here are some steps to take to effectively use a 3-bucket mopping system:

    1. Position a sieve or wringer over the center waste bucket. This is where waste and excess cleaning solution is collected.
    2. If using systems with locking casters, engage caster locks when you reach the area of use.
    3. Wet the mop head from the clean solution bucket.
    4. Using the wringer/sieve, remove excess solution into the waste bucket. Perform mopping process.
    5. After mopping about one square meter, place the mop head on the sieve and press contaminated solution into the waste bucket. Moving side to side to dislodge contaminants.
    6. Dip mop into rinse bucket, remove excess water into waste bucket, reapply cleaning or disinfecting solution.
    7. Remove excess cleaning or disinfecting solution into the waste bucket. Perform mopping process.

Repeat steps one through seven until the cleaning process is completed, or the solutions need to be changed. Cleaning or disinfecting solutions should be changed when the mop head or cleaning solution show signs of visible contamination.
